Rett Syndrome Treatment

No drug has been universally successful in improving the symptoms in Rett Syndrome.

Physio and occupational therapy are recommended to prevent stiffening and to encourage mobility. Music therapy is also beneficial in reducing the compulsive hand movements and increasing the girls attention span.

In some girls, various orthotic devices (braces and splints, for example) have been used to reduce toe-walking, scoliosis, and clenched hands. Such devices should be recommended by the girls physio or occupational therapists in consultation with her physician.

Hydrotherapy, underwater jet massage therapy, and hippotherapy (therapeutic horse back riding) are also beneficial.
