History of Rett Syndrome

Rett Syndrome was first described in 1965 in Vienna, Austria when Dr. Rett observed two girls in his waiting room making identical repetitive handwashing movements. After examining the girls one after the other, he found that what he was observing truly was a syndrome.

Unfortunately, he published his work only in obscure German language medical journals, so it did not reach the attention of the American medical community until late 1983 when Swedish doctor, Dr. Bengt Hagberg, published the first English Language report.

Shortly following this article, a number of American girls were diagnosed when Dr. Rett and Dr. Hagberg visited the Kennedy Institute in Baltimore, Maryland in 1985.
